Nintendo Press Conference

Nintendo is firmly stating that they are more interested in growing the market via casual gamers.  They started out their press conference talking about how they are more popular among women than the PS3 or Xbox 360.  They also filled their press conferences with youtube videos and news videos of people praising the Nintendo Wii.  Honestly the presentation was exactly what everyone thought would happen, Nintendo is recycling their proven hits and taking all their risks on new games designed for the soccer mom.  This emphasized on their largest announcement, WiiFit, an application that will allow you to exercise and track your fitness level via a small platform you stand on.  The device looks like a scale but can measure how your weight distribution.  This looks perfect for the fitness freak in your family.

Nintendo did show a couple games and a other peripherals.  Nintendo has created the Wii Zapper which allows you to create a light gun out of your wiimote and nunchuck.  They showed this off with the new Resident Evil game for the Wii and announce support for this with a couple 3rd part games.  It was interesting that the new Metroid Prime title will not be using this device.  The other device the Wii will have is a steering wheel that will come out with Mario Kart for the Wii.  Of all the games shown none looked that interesting.  For the most part we saw Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Mario Strikers and Super Smash Bros designed for the Nintendo diehards and several casual games made for your mom.    They talked about having 70 games for the Wii this year but didn't show or say what those titles will be.  I expect the majority of those titles are either not going to be delivered on time or either classic games that Nintendo poops out every Monday.

I admit I'm probably being too critical of Nintendo but I really want to justify buying there console but I really can't.  There are no games designed for me and I'm not about to buy the Wii for my 3 year old.  Nintendo has chosen their target market and it does not include me.
