Sony E3 press conference

The Sony press conference is everything the Nintendo press conference isn't.  Sony didn't show a single PowerPoint style presentation instead they showed a ton of game trailers.  The Sony presenters switched between standing on the main stage and their aviators in the new Playstation Home.  Playstation Home is obvious a very big deal for Sony and is their response to Xbox Live.  Home is a 3D environment similar to Second Life where you have an apartment that you can furnish and import photos and do other stuff like that.  For me this seems really lame but some people really did this stuff.

Sony did announce a new re-design to the PSP that will be lighter, have a better screen and faster load times than the current PSP.  Sony also showed how PSP will connect with the PS3 so you can watch movies from your PSP on your home TV.  The new features and games shown for the PSP make the device actually worth picking up.  The redesign will be available in September.

As I mentioned before Sony showed their future game lineup and listed of their exclusives.  The big titles they showed where Unreal Tournament 3, Haze, Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Assassin's Creed, Unchartedrakes Fortune, Killzone 2, Mettle Gear Solid 4 and Grand Turismo.  For now UT3 and Haze are PS3 exclusives but will be returning the 360 next spring after the Halo 3 fallout.  The game that really got me thinking was Heavenly Sword, an action game that you play as a chick with a very large sword.  The game looks stunning and can  definitely be a system seller if the reviews are high enough.

One message that was perfectly clear was that Sony used developers to say that their games could only be developed for the PS3 and the core processor is the most powerful processor in consoles.  This was often repeated by the developers that worked for Sony.  It is clear that their games can't do the talking for them so they need their paid developers to do the talking for them.  Fact is the CPU in the PS3 is more powerful than the 360's but the GPU in the 360 is much better so this ends up offsetting each other.  EA is an independent publisher/developer and their games will all run better on the 360 this fall.

This press conference was exactly what Sony needed to do tight now.  They mentioned the price cut then went right into the games.  They did not spend much time talking about anything else because they do have a very good lineup of games that are targeted directly at the hard core audience.  Sony sold over 100 million PS2 with this strategy and they really need to show that they have not abandoned the hard core gamer.  Sony showed a lot of games in their press conference and some of those big titles will be out this year.  Sony really needs to sell hope to their fans.  The games are not here yet but they will be soon.  For me I just hope Sony does another price cut soon because I really don't want to pay $500 for a game console.
