Random gaming news
Now for some random stuff that's news in the gaming world. The
biggest announcement is that Grand Theft Auto will not make their
October release date. It seems they have decided to push the title
release to Q2 '08. What this means is the title will release in March
of next year. Remember March is the new November in the gaming biz.
On August 8th prepare to hear about the Xbox 360 price cuts along all models. The Core drops to $279, the Pro $349 and the Elite is now $449. Microsoft has somewhere around one million units that are on store shelves that need to be moved out. This price cut should really help move those items. I also wonder if this will mean a drop in the price of the 20GB HDD since now the difference between the Core and the Pro is $70 instead of $100 like before. There have been some suggestions that the Core my be getting phased out. Some scans on the Internet suggest that Best Buy has decided to discontinue the item. There have also been rumors that games soon will require a hard drive so the Core would really be a bad deal.
There is a big fascination to declare BluRay the next gen winner but of the 1.5 million BluRays players sold in the US 1.4 million of those are PS3s. This doesn't show a big adoption of BluRay. In fact Hi Def DVD has less than 2% of the DVD market. With HD-DVD exclusive features in 300 it suggests that both formats are here for now. Most people will eventually realize that HD movies are not that much better than DVD movies and the cost of the movies and hardware really doesn't justify making the move for the casual movie enthusiast
Bioshock gets a perfect score in the next EGM magazine. The Xbox 360 console exclusive FPS is a sci-fi game where you play go to investigate this underground world where science is not compromised by morals. You have to find out what happened to the society and maybe fight a few Big Daddy's and possible harvest some Little Sisters. This is one bazaar game but looks awesome and should be one hell of a ride. I've already pre-orded my copy.
The first big PS3 title, Lair, get some bad reviews and then gets delayed. This game where you ride on a dragon in a medieval fantasy world looks really cool but the reviews say the controls suck. Maybe the developers are pulling it back to fix the controls. This game should sell really well for the PS3 but they need good reviews.
