For you, my Lord!
Ever get tired of always playing the good guy in a game? Ever just
want to be the evil tyrant looting villages and having minions that
will do your bidding? Well Overlord for the Xbox 360 is the game
you've been looking for. The game starts out as you are the new
Overlord and you need to rebuild your castle and regain the different
types of minions. The game takes place in a medieval land and you can
teleport to new areas as you discover them. One of the fun things
about minions is they say funny stiff when they bring you bounty like
"For you my Lord!" or "For you!" or "For the Overlord"
The game is a mix of resource management, combat and puzzles. You will start out only allowed to control a potion of the minions you harvest. There are four types of minions in the game: brown, red, blue and green. The brown minions are you brawlers and the minions you start out with. The red minions are fire resistance and they throw fire balls but are not good in close combat. The blue minions are water resistance and can revive dead minions but are very weak and not good for combat. The green minions are stealth killers and good overall fighters. To get more minions you need to kill animals in the world and harvest their life force. You can have hundreds of minions at your disposal but are only allowed to control a portion at a time. To control more minions you must find the lost parts of your tower. As you find more of these pieces you will increase your minion control, health and magical power.
The majority of the game is using your minions to fight for you. You can control your minions by picking all groups or individual groups and sending them to places or ordering them to protect a location. You can sweep your minions around the map by using the analog sticks for detailed control. I found the controls very easy to use and didn't have too many problems controlling my minions. The game throws you against difference enemies and has several bosses to fight that will require the use of all of your minions. The seven bosses are the heroes that defeated the old overlord. You hunt these guys down and get your revenge. The funny part of this is they represent the seven deadly sins. After joining to defeat the previous Overlord, the heroes end up giving into their devices.
Another use of your minions is the solve puzzles to progress along the game. Often you will come to something where you will need a specific type of minion to remove a barrier or access a switch. The game does a good job of switching these up and some are a bit tricky. You can point your minions to a fallen pillar or a switch and your minions will move these items to open doors and clear paths.
The game is a lot of fun and should be tries by anyone with an Xbox 360 since a free demo is available online. I really liked the art style and the very English humor of the game. You can have you minions do all kinds of funny stuff like get drunk and start peeing all over the place. They will dance to a fiddler then decide to kill the guy. This is no Pikman game like some have suggested. This is definitely a fun game to play to pass the time. A lot of the game reminds me of Fable and has actually got me playing Fable again.
