Summer Vacation
My wife referred to this past weekend as out summer vacation. It was a
out the usual since we got to spend Saturday at my wife's Uncle's cabin
on Lake Mille Lacs and we spend most of Sunday at he Aunt's house on
Lake Minnetonka. For the kids this was a blast. We left for Mille
Lacs early Saturday morning so we got there around 11 and went straight
to the beach.
Mille Lacs may be known for it's fishing but it is a nice lake for swimming. The beach by the cabin is a bit rocky but once you get out five feet the rocks disappear and you get a very soft sand. It's not a very deep lake in areas so I could walk out 60 yards from the beach and still be in chest high water.
Colin and Leah both have a life jackets so we could just let them float around. Since we where there with two of my wife's uncles and one's spouse there was plenty of parental supervision. Colin loved playing in the water and playing in the sand. it was a very hot day and I ended up getting burned pretty good. Typical Brian not putting lotion on soon enough and not doing a good job of it either. The back of my arms and shoulders just plain hurt.
After some technical issues Erin and Colin got to take a boat ride in her uncle's boat. I'm not a huge fans of boats that just got a new battery and look like they are older than me so I passed. I hung back and got to enjoy the water without the kids. We drove back that night and just missed a thunderstorm as we drove back to the city.
Unexpectedly we got a call from my wife's aunt and she invited us to their house for a pool day. Erin really wanted to go and my present was required so we had lunch and headed to her aunt's place. Today I swam with a shirt on and some 50 SPF lotion applied well before I got in the water. Colin got tossed a couple times in the pool and would jump to me from the end of the pool. From the shallow part of the pool this was no problem but eventually Colin wanted to use the diving board. This gets a bit more complex since I have to catch him as I tread water. Thankfully there is a floatie I can use to help keep me above water as i catch him. We caught this on video but didn't get any photos. My camera died at Leah's baptism so my flickr account is getting a bit lonely. We all went on a boat ride on Lake Minnetonka and took our time as we went around the lake.
After diner we made the trek home and the kids where in bed by seven. Hopefully they both sleep through the night and get the rest they need. It was a couple fun days at the lakes. This was definitely not how I grew up but it is a big deal to spend time on the lake or at your cabin in Minnesota.
