Playing BioShock
It is very rare that you get to play a game with the quality and depth
that BioShock offers. Often you get a like Gears of War that is
technically stunning and extremely well paced with memorable battles.
Often, like Gears of War, the developers drop the ball when it comes to
the story telling. BioShock does everything right by giving the gamers
an incredible city in Rapture, a fascinating city that went horribly
wrong, and they feed the gamers desire to learn what could have caused
this city to turn on itself and create the inhabitants that now reside
in it.
The game plays like a fairly open level FPS where you explore certain areas of Rapture and accomplish goals to proceed. The game gives you the standard fair weapons one would expect but like at RPG you are allowed to upgrade and modify these weapons to give them a little more punch. You will also pick up tonics that you can use that will help your combat or hacking skills. These tonics are some of the creations of the former inhabitants of Rapture where scientist had a bit of a free run to create ways to evolve.
The most noticeable example of the scientist work is the invention of plasmids. Plasmids are genetic alterations that give you some new power. You start the game with the plasmid to shoot electricity out of your hand. You learn very early this becomes an essential tool for dealing with the Splicers (the guys trying to kill you in Rapture). It is very gratifying to use the environment with a plasmid to help you fend off the Splicers. Since water tends to collect on the floor you can shock Splicers that are standing in pools of water. One of my new favorite plasmids allows me to turn a Big Daddy(I'll explain later) in my personal body guard.
Although the city is run down and looks like absolute hell there are some people still walking around. For the most part these people are Splicers. The Splicers seem to be these freaked out folks of all ages that have only one goal, harvesting ADAM (source from which plasmids come from) from the other inhabitants of Rapture. To do this they have to kill you so they once they see you they will come after you. There are a variety of types of Splicers but they are all people that just went horribly wrong. There are "normal" people in Rapture and they are far and few between but you will count on their help to get through the game.
The most interesting characters in the game are the Big Daddies and the Little Sisters. The Big Daddies are huge hulking things that look to be armored by deep sea diving suits and equipped with a drill for an arm and a big gun. These hulking beasts roam the city of Rapture and will not attack you unless you attack them or a Little Sister. The Little Sisters are little girls that have gone through some transformation to become almost inhuman as they go around Rapture and take the ADAM from the dead lying around Rapture. Since everyone wants ADAM, the Little Sisters are the targets of the Splicers and others in Rapture. The game throws the moral dilemma at you of how you deal with the Little Sisters and the Big Daddies. You can choose to ignore them but then you will have a very hard time advancing in the game. Fighting a Big Daddy is a tough challenge and harder than any boss I've come across in BioShock. Once you've defeated the Big Daddy you must make your choice, harvest the ADAM by killing the Little Sister or rescue the Little Sister by transforming her back to a normal little girl. If you choose to kill the Little Sister you get more ADAM than if you choose to rescue her. It's your choice on how to proceed. That anon allows you to buy more plasmids and tonics so by getting more the game should be easier.
So far I love the game and can say this is the best game I've played on the 360. The story of Rapture is very compelling and I can not get enough. This game is only a single player game but I feel it does such a good job telling a story and making it a fun game to play. If you own a 360 or gaming PC you are missing out if you don't play this game. A demo is now available for both the PC and the 360 so go give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
