Wii dominates July sales data

The sales data for July offered a lot of insight on how the console market would respond to Sony's price drops and an increase in Wii in the marketplace.  Sony chose to have their price drop in the deadest part of the year where very few marque games where released and almost none of them for the PS3.  The biggest deal was the ability to get six free BluRay movies with the purchase of a PS3.  How would consumer respond and how well will the other consoles perform against the PS3 price drop?

Many analysts expected the PS3 to just narrowly out sell the 360 in July.  Neither system had much software support during the month except the annual EA series NCAA.  It was already reported that many retailers had seen spikes in PS3 sales and they had in fact doubled.  Well the Xbox 360 just managed to sell 13K more units than the PS3 in July with 170K 360s being sold compared to 159K PS3s.  This is still about double what the PS3 had been selling so it is clear that this move dramatically improved the PS3s sales.  Next month we will see how the price drop of the 360 will affect their sales.

Another month and another 425K Wiis sold at retail.  For those of you keeping track at home that's an increase of almost 45K from last month and 90K from the month before.  What could be causing this raise in sales?  Is it just more inventory or is is it kids coming home from school?  It's hard to say but I suspect that since there is so little new software on the 360 and PS3 the last two months that hardcore gamers are picking up a Wii to fill the void.  Nintendo has come out and said they are unable to meet demand in the US  and have not resolved their manufacturing issues.  I suspect they are holding back units for the holiday season.  Interesting thing is depending where you look you can find a Wii.  I saw several at my local Costco last weekend and saw another at Best Buy.  The Wii should surpass the 360 in world wide sales in August.  It is project that the fact may have already occurred but we will not know for sure until Nintendo releases their shipped totals at their next quarterly meeting.

Rounding out the consoles is the PS2 with is still selling well but is finally showing signs of decline.  The PS2 sold 222K units last month and still help the majority of games sold in July.  The big sign here is that the Xbox 360 version of NCAA outsold the PS2 version for the first time last month.  This is a major indicator on how people have moved away from the PS2 and towards new consoles.  NCAA for the 360 sold 397K units vs the PS2 with 236K and the PS3 with 156K units.  Combined the 360 sold more copies of NCAA that the two Playstation consoles.

Next month will be the release of Madden '08 and the 360 price cut.  It will be interesting to see how well BioShock sold in it's first couple of weeks a well.  I'm hoping BioShock does something close to a million because it really is a great game and should get the respect that it deserves.  Check out the picture below of a Big Daddy holding a Little Sister.  We'll also see if Sony can keep selling PS3s at it's current rate and how well the Wii performs after an amazing month.
