Achievement Spoilers
One of the features of the Xbox 360 that made a significant impact on
me was the introduction of achievements. I love achievements and I
love seeing how I stack up against other gamers on my friends list,
gamers I've met online and gamers of some fame. Often when I buy a
game, or often before I buy a game, I check out what their achievements
are and how many points they are worth.
With BioShock I reviewed the achievements online and saw that they had some big point achievements for doing certain acts in the game. Now game developers have the option of making some achievements secrete. You will not see what these achievements are for or how many points they are unless you have earned them. Some games, like BioShock, keep the level completion achievements secrete and they keep some special end of game achievements secrete as well. This allows the gamer to have some mystery when they play through games.
This works well if you don't want your game players to accidentally learn some twist in your game. Now most games, even if you read the achievement, you really don't get any spoilers from the achievement titles. Unfortunately this is not the case in BioShock. I plan to tread lightly here in case you have not seen this yet but one of the achievements in the game gives away a major twist in the story line for no reason. It is a very high point achievement and is rewarded for the final boos battle. The title chosen could have easily been changed to remove any story spoiling so this does bother me.
Obviously I completed BioShock this weekend and loved every minute of the game. It is by far the best game I've played in 2007 and is by far the best single player game I've played on the 360 so far. I hope developers make better options in choosing names for their achievements in the future because it kind of sucks when one of your big twists is blown.
