If BluRay loses does HD-DVD win?
BluRay Loses
Here is a link to an interesting article on the HD-DVD vs BluRay format war. With the announcement that Paramount would now be exclusively* supporting HD-DVD, it seems the format war may be shifting in favor of HD-DVD. The article goes on to talk about how the high cost of BluRay and the poor adoption of the PS3 has gone on to hurt adoption of the format. The author also throws out the possibility that neither format will succeed.
I tend to think that having a HD-DVD player is nice to have since I have an HDTV but not worth the price of admission. I own the HD-DVD add on to the Xbox 360 so I paid about a third of what the standalone players cost. I do not think the visual quality it high enough to warrant the price of the player or the media. I do buy some HD-DVD movies but I get the majority of movies I watch from Netflix. I absolutely hate paying more for Dual format disks as well since they cost around $35 each.
In the end I expect movie downloads will be the future. Services like XBox Live Marketplace, AppleTV or even Comcast's On Demand will be the future of watching high definition movies. I much rather pick a movie from a list and then download the selection to watch at my leisure.
*All Spielberg movies will still be coming out on BluRay.
