Where is the price cut for accessories?
I've been thinking about this ever since the price cut on the Xbox
360 models. Why have we not seen a price cut for the more expensive
accessories? Right now if you want to buy a 20 GB HDD for the 360 you
will spend $100 while if you buy a 120 GB HDD you'll spend $180. Lets
do some math, the 20GB costs $5 per GB while the 120GB drive costs
$1.50 per GB. How much of a markup do you think those accessories has?
15%? 25%? 50%? Seems to me like they are a ripoff any way you slice
it.
Another pricy accessory happens to be the Wifi adapter. Since the 360 doesn't come with Wifi included (unlike the Wii or the PS3) you have to spend $100 on the 360 branded wifi adapter. This happens to be the same price I spent to buy a wifi adapter on my original Xbox. Thankfully my old one works with the 360.
This time around everything is about being wireless. The wireless controllers for the 360 run you $49 a pop. I doubt you'll see this price go down but it would be nice since most people want at least two controllers. At least you don't spend as much as buying a Wiimote and Numchuck that will set you back $60 for the pair.
When you look to buy a gaming console you need to consider the price of the accessories. You just may end up spending more on extra controllers and memory cards than you do on the actual system.
