Is BioShock ruined by an auto update?

It seems like one thing this generation of gaming consoles has brought us is game patches.  These patches seem to come every once in a while to fix some issues that couldn't get fixed before the game released.  Often these patches will make the game play better by fix some nagging issue that wasn't discovered until a few hundred thousand people started playing the game.  In the case of the BioShock Auto Update it actually makes the game play worse.

The developers of BioShock, 2K Boston, never released what the auto update did but it was presumed to fix a couple issues with Big Daddies getting stuck are some other random issues that where occurring.  For me the game played flawlessly before the auto update.  I was able to play through the game twice with no issues what so ever.  That was until I downloaded the auto update.  Ever since the game's frame rate has sever problems loading menus and searching bodies.  What really makes this so bad is the game is was great before but now is barely playable.  I've tried the trick to hold the bumpers down on starting the game but that doesn't fix the game entirely.  Having to do some trick to clear a games cache isn't something you should have to do. (Hold the Left and Right bumper once the title starts all the way till you see the Start message.  This should clear the cache and resolve the slow down issue.)

One of the biggest disappointments of this generation has been the willingness of developers to push out a patch once a game has gone gold.  Often these patches are helpful and but once you get one like the BioShock "fix" you wonder if you really want to download that latest auto update.  BioShock was a Game of the Year front runner for me but now I have to think twice.  The game I played when it first came out was amazing but after the patch it's just so dam buggy it's hard to play.  Thankfully the fix mentioned above does resolve the issue but for those not game savy enough to find this resolution BioShock is ruined for them.
