Revisiting Halo
To prepare for Halo 3 coming out in less than a week I decide to replay
Halo: Combat Evolved. It is interesting how you can pick up a game
that is six years old and just get absorbed into it just like you did
when you first played the game. Halo was the first FPS to master the
controls on a game pad and did an amazing job of pulling you into the
game.
I am so far through the Library level and can say the game is still crazy fun to play. I love the use of music to set the tone of the action. The game is built on the idea of "30 seconds of fun" and they try to build as many of those moments as possible. Playing through the game a second time I was surprised how action packed the game plays. It seems once you clear one area you are immediately thrown into another full scale encounter. This game really is one of the best games ever made.
On this play through I am a lot more cognition about the weapons. The pistol is crazy powerful and great for taking out Hunters, shoot them three times in the back and they are down. The assault rifle is a weak weapon against the covenant but is very effective against the flood spores. I remember hating the flood and the Library level the first time I played through Halo most likely because I played on Hard difficult. The Flood is a pain in the but to kill and they come from everywhere. Still I found it very rewarding to blast my way through the Library and even passed on some of the health packs.
Halo stands as one of the best games ever made. It is just pure fun to play with an amazing soundtrack that will make your heart thump. The story in Halo is very unobtrusive as the game only feeds you pieces and you run a little blind. This element really helps you as you learn that what you just did put the entire universe at risk. Halo is all about the action of fighting the Flood and the Covenant. Halo also has one excellent offline multiplayer modes. Their multiplayer customization has never been matched by any other game which gives this game staying power like no other.
