Halo Effect

The Halo effect has been referred to as how one game can come around and dominate the game market.  Games that try to come out often get ignored and end up having poor sales.  This also leads to crazy sales of game consoles and copies of Halo.  Well vgchartz.com has posted their latest sales data and in two weeks Halo 3 (3.2m) has become the highest selling game on the 360 passing Gears of War (3m).  The Xbox 360 has also outsold the Nintendo Wii for three weeks in a row now, outselling the PS3 5 to 1 over the same period.

It will be interesting to see how long the tail is on Halo 3 and how it will help the Xbox 360 sell.  Everyone expected the Xbox 360 to outsell all other consoles in September since so many people would be buying a 360 to play Halo 3.  It will be interesting to see if the 360 can keep this momentum and continue to sell above 400 units a month in October and then see how the holiday sales season exponentially increases sales.  The traditional thinking is November sales are double the October sales and December sales are double the November sales.

I do expect to see a drop in October sales for the Xbox 360 but they will be well above 300K units and possibly above 400K.  The months of November and December will most likely be obscene and we could see 2 million sales of the Xbox 360 this December.  Sony is hoping the $399 40GB PS3 will content against the 360.  Their lack of any quality software and the huge delays from games like Unreal Tournament 3, Stranglehold, Half Life 2 and Grand Theft Auto 4 really makes one wonder what's wrong with the PS3.
