Wii bubble bursting in Japan
Over the past two months an interesting trend has started to take place
in Japan. The sales of the Wii have dramatically dropped in the land
of the raising sun. Just a few weeks ago the Wii was averaging 80K
units sold a week but now the Wii seems to be averaging just above 20K
units in Japan. You have to wonder that happened to the sales? The Wii
was selling like crazy then all of a sudden a 75% drop in sales.
The one things that seems to have hammered the Wii's sales is the new redesigned PSP. Since the new PS was launched on Japan the Wii has not cracked 30K in sales. Hand held gaming in Japan dominated the market as the DS Lite sells 80K a week no matter what happens or comes out. Problem with giving the credit to the PSP is the Wii sales were falling before the PSP redesign was launched.
There may not be one specific reason that the Wii is slowing down in Japan. It is surprising to hear that there are Wiis on store shelves collecting dust. It could just be a lull while gamers wait for the new Mario game but if this continues it might just be a sign of the times in Japan. Console gaming in Japan is on the decline and even the quirkiness of the Wii is not enough to overcome this trend. It will be more interesting to see if this trend follows to the rest of the gaming world.
