Halo 3 pwns September
September was pwned by Halo 3 with 3.3 million copies sold and 527.8K Xbox 360s sold in the US. The NPD released their numbers today and for the five week period of September the 360 lead at 527.8K, Wii followed at 501K, PS2 sold 215K and the PS3 trailed with 119.4K units sold. The Wii had it's 2nd best month ever in the US maintaining it's 100K/week average. The PS3 sales have dropped for the second straight month after the July price cut.
On the games sales side the Xbox 360 out sold the Wii games 4:1 and PS3 games 8:1 for the month. The 360 had four of the top 10 titles for the month with Halo 3 ( 3.3M) in 1st, Skate(175K) in 5th, Madden '08 (173K) in 6th and Bioshock(150K) in 8th. The Xbox 360 games represented 74% of all next gen games. Wii Play came in 2nd selling 282K units and Metroid Prime 3 came in 7th selling 167K units for the Wii. The ONLY PS3 game in the top ten was Heavenly Sword coming in 10th selling 139K units.
Now September was a banner month for Microsoft with the 360 outselling the Wii for the first time since last December. Microsoft sold a lot of games this month and should expect to continue to sell well for the rest of the year with Halo Life 2, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Rock Star and Guitar Hero 3 all on their way before December. The Xbox 360 is still the top current gen gaming console in the US with 6.8 million units sold in the US and expect Microsoft to keep this title as they should sell another 2.5 million consoles this year in the US.
The Wii can hang their hat that they are averaging 100K units sold per week for the past 13 weeks but they have to be disappointed in games sales. The fact that Metroid Prime 3 can't sell 400K units is a bit concerning and Mario Strikers Charged is no where to be found. Another big question has to be where are the 3rd part games for the Wii and why aren't they selling? Tiger Wood '08 and My Sims should have been solid games for the Wii but both were sent to their deaths at retail. If this pattern continues expect the Wii to lost 3rd party support.
If Sony is not in panic mode then they are in total denial. The PS3 is a complete flop in the US so we will see the 4th iteration of the PS3 next month, the 40GB $399 PS3 with no PS2 backward compatibility. Sony launched with the $599 60GB model and the $499 20GB model then phased out the 20GB model as it was not moving at retail. In July Sony introduced the 80GB PS3 at $599 with limited backward compatibility with PS2 games and announced the 60GB unit will drop to $499 while supply lasted. Now we have the 80GB unit dropping to $499 and the 40GB unit coming in at $399 on November 2nd. Seems to me Sony IS panicking and is trying to find the right combination of feature cuts and price cuts to compete in the current console market.
