Update: Walmart HD-DVD Rumor, no longer a rumor
Last April I posted about a rumor concerning Walmart and cheap HD-DVD
players here. At the time it was rumored that Walmart was going to
purchase 2 million HD-DVD players and price them at $199 just in time
for the holiday shopping season. At the time it was believed that they
would be some generic brand making the players out of China. Well as
we already know all rumors are true until proven false. It seems that
Walmart now has a deal for Toshiba A2 HD-DVD players costing $198. Per
the story on Engadget the price will go in effect nationwide November
3rd. The Toshiba A2 is by no means a high end HD-DVD player,
supporting only 720p/1080i, but for folks that have not made the jump
to 1080p or not interested in paying for 1080p (something you don't
really notice below 42" screen) this player is a great deal. Combine
the Toshiba A2 with he 32" Vizio and you can have a quality HDTV and
HD-DVD player for under $800.
Update: Seems the deal is real and should be effective immediately. As someone who hasn't had their 360 for two weeks I'll likely pick one of the players up since I've already invested in a couple movies.
