Guitar Hero III Sales
I have to admit I'm a bit intimidated by
the idea of playing a game like Guitar Hero. I'm sure it's not too
tough but when I tried it at the Best Buy kiosk I failed my song in
record time. Still this has been one of the most popular game
franchises out there the past couple years and we have some early sales
data.
Since GH3 came out on Xbox 360, Wii, PS2 and PS3 it will be interesting to see how this casual game did across all these platforms. Well to no ones surprise the Xbox 360 version out sold all others with it 800,000 copies sold. In second place the Wii sold 270,000, followed by the PS2 at 255,000 and in the rear the PS3 sold 110,000 copies. For some market perspective 11% of Xbox 360 owners bought the game while 5% of Wii owners, 0.5% of PS2 owners and 5.5% of PS3 owners bought the game.
These are some early numbers and probably only reflect the more hard core fans because they are the ones that know release dates for games. Still with all the marketing going on for this game even the casual fans should know that the game is available now. The Wii sales of GH3 are the most promising for developers because until now Wii owners had only been supporting Nintendo software. Now you have a non-Nintendo title that looks like it could be one of the best selling Wii games of the year.
There has been some talk that even though Guitar Hero 3 sold over a million copies this launch has been a bit disappointing. Well those people are just plain wrong. When Guitar Hero 2 launched for the PS2 (same day as Gears of War) they sold 225,000 units on launch but over time went on to sell over 3 million copies. The Xbox 360 version which shipped six months after the PS2 version sold 325,00 units and went on to sell 1.65 million copies. Both launches can be considered good not not stellar but over time both easily broke the one million barrier and have become top seller for both consoles. So for those that worry Guitar Hero 3 hasn't sold enough copies, just you wait. This game has legs and will be selling copies well into the new year.
