Sega Rally Revo Impressions
I'm a bit new to rally racing games and Sega Rally Revo does a nice job
of making it an easy transition. The game doesn't so much feel like a
rally game like Dirt but more like an arcade racer that has multi-car
races on mixed surfaces. On one race you could drive on blacktop,
gravel, snow and ice. The courses range from the arctic, desert,
mountains and pains where you will drive through snow, mud, water, ice
and dirt roads.
The biggest selling point for SRR is the graphics and the friendly navigator giving out instructions. The game takes place in colorful environments around the world and they all look beautiful with an arcade feel to them. None of the environments look photo realistic like in Forza Motorsport 2 or the PGR series. What I really like was how the cars left trails in the mud and snow and gave you a path to follow. The navigator in the car also will let you know when a turn is coming up and how gradual it will be. This is a bit more user friendly for us non-rally folks.
What wasn't very user friendly was the controls in this game. I fought the controls for most of the game until I just decided to drive my car like I'm driving a boat. The car will skid and fish tail on almost every surface and unlike a real car you control the car on it's center, not on it's ends or wheels. I even noticed I could steer the car while in the middle of a big jump. If the controls where a little better this game would have been a keeper. The game makes some interesting design choices by placing invisible walls around the track so that you can never leave the course or take a shortcut through the forest.
Overall I think this rally game is a nice rental and you can work to get a few achievements out of it but compared to Dirt it's just no match. The game is veered towards the casual gamer with it's invisible walls, lack of car damage and easy instructions while driving. The problem comes with the game game difficulty that occasionally ramps way up then way back down. That with the handling of the cars makes the game not as approachable as it should have been.
