Game of the Year Short List

It's that time of the year so we need to start talking about what was the best game of the year.  I don't own a Wii so Super Mario Galaxy is not going to be on my short list.  I don't own a PS3 so if they had a really good game out this year it will not be on my list.  What I do own is an Xbox 60 so I'll talk about those games that I have played.  I'm only talking about what I have first hand experience playing.

The Short List:

BioShock - This mix of RPG/FPS that weaves an interesting story in a strange and oddly wonderful underwater city is superb.  I played through this game three times hunting for plasmids, saving Little Sisters and enjoying every audio diary.  BioShock was a risky game to make that turned into one of the best games to play.  It's amazing how gratifying it is to hit a splicer with a bolt of lighting then finishing him off with the wrench.

Call of Duty 4 - This modern warfare FPS gives you a new perspective about surviving a fire fight against a large enemy force.  This game raises the bar as one of the most realistic games graphically and game play wise.  This game tells a fascinating story of a military upraising in the middle east that end badly for all sides and the hunt for the terrorist/arms dealer that was behind it all.

Crackdown - This sand lot game was a ton of fun with some very good co-op functionality with interesting achievements.  Early on it was thought this game was just a throw in for the Halo 3 beta but it became so much more.  Who would have thought climbing up buildings and throwing cars would have been so much fun?  This is the closest we have ever been to a good super hero game.

Forza Motorsport 2 - Any game that I have actually played for over 50+ days has to be on this list.  Forza 2 was a very compelling racer that gave you a very realistic feel for racing.  I really enjoyed modifying my cars to get them to a state where I could win the races.  It also didn't hurt I had a little achievement gathering contest with one of my friends.

Halo 3 - The end of a great trilogy.  This game was made for the Halo 3 fan boys out there and it did not disappoint them.  The campaign was a meaty experience what gave you some fun game play and enjoyable encounters.  The big complaint was that Halo 3 didn't try anything too risky in the campaign and was not much different than the original halo.  I understand these issues but feel they are weak arguments against of the the biggest games ever.  I haven't even touched upon the multiplayer, forge or the theater.  This game has more content that any other game out there.

Why they aren't nominated:
Assassins Creed - I simply have not played this game yet and maybe I will get a chance before the end of the year.  It's on my game queue at GameFly so it should arrive eventually.

Guitar Hero 3 - I have not played this game but may look to pick it up if I don't get it as a gift over the holidays.

Mass Effect - I'm hoping GameFly send this one to me soon because I'd really liek to give it a try.

The Orange Box - I did not enjoy Half Life 2 but did like Episode 1 and 2 for the most part.  Portal was interesting but way over rated.
