November NPD's Software Sales Data

Here are the game sales totals for the month of November in North America.  The number of games sold is absolutely crazy with almost three titles selling over a million copies.  It's interesting to see the two biggest genres in gaming now seem to be First person Shooters (3 of top 10) and Rhythm (4 of top 12 ) games with Madden no where on this list.

November 2007
1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
(Xbox 360) -- 1.57m
2. Super Mario Galaxy
(Wii) -- 1.12m
3. Assassin's Creed
(Xbox 360) -- 980K
4. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
(PS2) -- 967K
5. Wii Play w/ Remote
(Wii) -- 564KK
6. Mass Effect
(Xbox 360) -- 473K
7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
(PS3) -- 444K
8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
(Wii) -- 426K
9. Halo 3
(Xbox 360) -- 387K
10. Assassin's Creed
(PS3) -- 377K

11. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Xbox 360) -- 367,000
12. Rock Band (Xbox 360) -- 312,000

Well it's good to be a game on the Xbox 360 since they took 6 of the top 12 spots.  The 360 versions of Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed  sold over 3 times as many copies as their PS3 version.  I am a little surprised to see Mass Effect couldn't break the half million mark since it was one of the most anticipated games this holiday season.  The Wii did well with 1.12 million copies of Super Mario Galaxy sold and check out those Guitar Hero III sales.  I was surprised to see how well GH3 sells on the Wii and PS2 but this goes to show that this game is truly a fan favorite of the casual gamer.

Guitar Hero III sold 1.4 million copies across all platforms in October and now has sold another 1.7 million copies in November.  This is one interesting number considering most games sell 80% of their total sales in the first month.  What this implies is the casual gamer that doesn't follow release dates are buying this game in month 2+ while the hardcore bought the game day one.  It will be interesting to see if this phenomenon will occur for Rock Band or it it's $169 price tag is too much for the casual gamer to spend.

Games Sold in Top 10:
Xbox 360: 3.4m
Wii: 2.1m
PS2: 967K
PS3: 821K

Games sold is where the Xbox 360 stands heads and shoulders above all other consoles.  The Xbox 360 sold more games than the PS3 and the Wii combined last month.  If you think of the number of Wii  consoles sold it is a bit surprising they can not sell more games.  This goes to show that the casual gamers that buy the Wii don't buy many other games.  This tends to lead to publishers excluding high profile games from being released on the Wii.  Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed will never be on the Wii because they will not sell enough copies to cover the price to port the game to that system.

The lackluster PS3 sales (games and hardware) has caused several developers to make former Play Station exclusives come to the Xbox 360.  The PS3 games sales will not cover the cost of making the game so they bring the game to other more popular systems.  Originally the Guitar Hero series was exclusive to the PS2 but came to the Xbox 360 and the Wii.  Assassin's Creed was originally going to be a PS3 exclusive but ended up coming to the Xbox 360 after Sony's E3 '06 debacle.  The choice to release Assassin's Creed on the Xbox 360 as well made Ubisoft an additional $58 million.
