Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer Impressions
Recently I've been playing
a lot of Call of Duty 4 multiplayer. Now for those of us with launch
Xbox 360's you most likely played COD2 online since it was the best
online 360 game at launch. Well Call of Duty 4 steps up to the plate
and hits a home run with it's online game play and class creation.
Unlike some multiplayer games Call of Duty 4 is all about leveling up and customizing your avatar. You will start out with the stock weapons based on the class you choose. By default you start out with the assault riffle class using a M16. As you level up and complete challenges with a weapon you gain attachments and camelflouge for that weapon. As you meet these challenges you also increase your XP which helps you level up.
When you first start out playing you are limited to what game types you can play. As you gain experience and win matches more game types become available. This feature really makes getting into call of Duty 4 a friendlier experience. Even though you have a ranking you will play against people of all levels. It's not uncommon to be a 3 and play against people in the 30s and 40s. Still the more competitive folks out there can play in their exclusive game types so they don't sour the waters for the new folks.
As fun as the experience is there are some features I don't care for. First off if you get three kills in a row you get to see where people on are our HUD. If you get five in a row you can call in an air strike. Then if you get seven in a row you can call in a helicopter for air support. Then there is the 3 types of special attributes you get. These added attributes allow you to drop a grenade when you die or run faster or let you shot with more accuracy These items just end up helping you get more kills you probably don't deserve.
Overall the online play in Call of Duty 4 has been a fun experience. It's a bit of a deeper experience than most online games with it's customizable class structure. I find the specific challenges to be fun and they add a feeling of accomplishment to the online matches. With a little work almost all of the challenges can be completed. If you on the fence over this game I definitely recommend this one.
