Microsoft CES Press Conference
I watched the entire press conference on Microsoft's site Sunday
night. The majority of the event covered Bill's last day at Microsoft
and what his vision is for the next ten years, there was some gaming
related tidbits. First off there where no hardware announcements for
anything like that. Microsoft announced they have shipped 17.7 million
Xbox 360s world wide and now have 10 million Xbox Live members. That's
an increase of 7.3 million over last year's console totals and I
believe 4 million more Live members.
What Microsoft did not discuss at all was HD-DVD. Instead Microsoft talked about how they now have MGM, Disney and ABC as partners in their Xbox Live Marketplace providing HD content. Xbox Live Marketplace now has 36 content partners and will have two the HD content available for download than any cable or satellite company.
The one other gaming note was that IPTV finally has a partner willing to use the Xbox 360 as a set top box: British Telecom. It sounds like you will be able to buy a Xbox 360 from BT and then use it to have cab;e tv access via your 360. One of the hot rumors out there was a Xbox 360 with built-in HD-DVD drive and 320 GB HDD to be a IPTV/DVR set top box for Japan. Obviously this didn't happen.
Overall CES has had very little good gaming stories come out of it. The original Xbox was revealed at CES in 2001 but since then the game coverage has been light. If there is another Xbox coming they will absolutely wait till the model is on a boat to the US before talking about it. Still having more content on Xbox Live Marketplace is always good and with ABC adding their prime time shows it makes every major network represented. Hopefully that content will eventually be available in the Zune Marketplace.
