Sony's Worldwide Sales Catching Xbox 360

There have been some charts out there showing that the PS3 has been catching the Xbox 360 in world wide sales when you lineup the launch dates.  When you take a closer look at the numbers you see that what is happening is the PS3 is doing better in Japan and in Europe than the Xbox 360.

It's no surprise that the Xbox 360 has not been selling like crazy in Japan.  The first Xbox never sold over half a million units in Japan.  In the last year Xbox 360 sold 257,841 units in '07 while the Wii fold 3.1 million and the PS3 sold 1.2 million.  So in Japan alone the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by one million units.

In Europe those numbers are all very fuzzy.  There is no universal outlet like Enterbrain or NPD that provides fairly accurate sales numbers.  There are sites like Vgcharts.com that offer speculative European sales data but that site has a +/-10% statistical difference on US numbers so who knows how accurate their European data is.  Still it seems that the Xbox 360 does very well in the UK while the PS3 does very well in mainland Europe.  So it seems safe to say the PS3 is selling more units in Europe but not that much more than the Xbox 360.  The Wii is still out pacing both consoles in Europe.

There seems to be a popular theme that if your country's primary language is English you are more likely to own an Xbox 360 instead of a PS3.  In the other PAL territories like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa the Xbox 360 does much better than the PS3.  Again the Wii does better than everyone else.

Now the amount that VGCharts.com is reporting that the PS3 is outselling the Xbox 360 in it's first year is marginal.  Much less than the difference between the XBox 360 and PS3 in Japan.  The fact is on hard NPD data the Xbox 360 out sold the PS3 by over 900,000 units in it's first year in the US.  The PS3 has benefited from two price cuts during it's first year while the Xbox 360 waited over 18 months for it's first price cut.  The Xbox 360 has shipped over 17.7 million consoles world wide in two years while the original Xbox shipped 25 million during it's lifetime.

Really all the PS3 folks are doing is competing for second place in overall hardware behind the success of the Wii.  The Wii is on pace to sell 60 million consoles over it's life cycle and will be the clear winner this generation.  The PS3 can have a decent showing in Europe and in Japan to ensure that it is a factor.  The Xbox 360 is the leading selling console in the US an can hold on to that title for the majority of 2008.  The PS3 is no longer a factor in the US market but can still give the Xbox 360 a run for second place at the end of this console life cycle.
