The Problem with GameFly

As someone that tends to play a lot of games I enjoy having the ability to rent the occasional game to save money and allow me to try games I wouldn't buy.  I started out using the 1 rental model at GameFly and was pleased with how the service works.  The time it takes to get a new game is much longer than say using Netflix but since GameFly is still starting out I let this slide and decided to upgrade to the 2 rental plan.  For the most part this has resolved the time delay issues for me.  It still takes about a week from when I mailed the game out to get a replacement.

My newest issues with the service is about being able to rent the top games.  Like most gamers out there I have been looking forward to Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect.  Both games came out in November and have had a large buzz about them.  The problem is it's the middle of January and I still have not gotten either game.

Now over that time I have been playing games.  In fact I've played and returned five games to GameFly only to receive some other games on my queue.  Sure Assassin's Creed is #1 and Mass Effect is #2 but instead of getting either of those I've gotten Dirt, Sega Revo, Dynasty Warriors:Gundum, Avatar:Last Air Bender and now I have Conan. All these games were below Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed on my queue.

Now I guess I'm not too surprised about this since there are a lot of GameFly members and probably not enough copies bought to meet demand.  Both games are fairly meaty experiences so they will take a couple weeks to complete.  I think the lesson here is if you want to play that big holiday release game then go buy it.  You'll wait forever if want to rent it from GameFly.
