NPD Year in Review
As part of the NPD release they also game out the year totals for hardware and software. This data just emphasizes how well the Wii and Xbox 360 have performed and how poorly the PS3 has performed.
Hardware totals for 2007 (life-to-date in parentheses)
Wii: 6.29 million (7.38 million)
Xbox 360: 4.62 million (9.15 million)
PS2: 3.97 million (41.12 million)
PS3: 2.56 million (3.25 million)
Software totals for 2007
1. Halo 3 (Xbox 360) -- 4.82m
2. Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) -- 4.12m
3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) -- 3.04m
4. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS2) -- 2.72m
5. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) -- 2.52m
6. Pokémon Diamond (DS) -- 2.48m
7. Madden NFL 08 (PS2) -- 1.90m
8. Guitar Hero II (PS2) -- 1.89m
9. Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360) -- 1.87m
10. Mario Party 8 (Wii) -- 1.82m
As you can see the Wii outsold the PS3 2:1 and sold 1.6 million more units than the Xbox 360. The Wii has three titles in the top ten with two Mario games and casual game that includes a free controller. The Wii is now averaging 525K consoles sold per month now. That number is simply mind numbing and will start going down in 2008. The sales will still stay up but the market will eventually be saturated to a point where sales will start to decline.
The Xbox 360 outsold the PS2 and PS3 in 2007 bettering it's HD rival by over 2 million units. Halo 3 lead all games selling 4.82 million copies on the Xbox 360. The 360 version of Call of Duty 4 sold over 3 million copies in only two months. The Xbox 360 version of Assassin's Creed stole Gears of War's crown as fasted selling new IP. The Xbox 360 is now averaging 351K console sold per month which is a boost of 70K from last year. Microsoft will sell it's 10 millionth console in the US some time in early March.
The sad fact that the PS3 could not beat the PS2 demonstrates Sony's failure to move it's core PS2 fans over to their next generation console. The PS2 sold over a million more consoles than the PS3 and the PS3 did not have a single title in the top 10 for 2007 while the PS2 had three. The PS3 is averaging 231K consoles sold per month in the US but has seen some momentum since their second $100 price cut in less than a year. The PS3 has some decent games for the console now but no one is buying them. Maybe Final Fantasy XII, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet can save the PS3 in 2008 but I expect none of these to sell very well in the US.
