Unfair and Unbalanced: Mass Effect Edition

Now I tend to take all media coverage of games with a gain of salt.  These people tend to never actually play the games they spend so much time harping on.  The latest case in point is the Fox show, Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, which did a nice little hack job on the game Mass Effect.  I didn't watch the show but I did catch the clip from Youtube embedded in the NY Post piece I'm linking off to below.

From the title of the piece it is very clear none of the people gathered to talk about the game have played it except for Geoff Keighley who attempts to tell them the games does not contain graphics sex scenes or full nudity.  In fact the host tried to spin this off into a Sex and Violence issue for kids when this game is rated M for 17 and above.  The entire piece was smear attack by uninformed "experts" was setup by Fox news to get it's agenda out with no regard to facts.

The publisher of the game, Electronic Arts, has now sent out a response to Fox News asking for them to straighten the record.  EA forward the letter to the press as well.  I'm glad to see EA stand up to the general media for some of the most bias journalism I've seen.  I don't expect much of of fox News and don't watch any of their shows.  All I've ever heard from some folks that have been on their show is they play up their "Fair and Balanced" line when they are anything but fair or balanced.

As a response to the uneducated and biased view points of the other guest on the show, Cooper Lawrence's book reviews are getting spammed with poor reviews on Amazon.com.  Although Amazon has started monitoring this and deleting the one star reviews it is clear this person's views should be put in question since she obviously knew nothing about the game yet chose to come onto a show and talk like an expert.

I really do hope EA gets Fox News to apologise for their poor journalism but I expect they will ignore that it ever happened.  It would be nice to see EA sue Fox news for slander as well since their coverage is likely to affect sales of the game in some circles.  This isn't the first uneducated attach on games and will not be the last.  Just remember the mainstream press is the last place you actually want to get informed information about games.
