EA wants to buy Take-Two
In a move that would easily be the biggest acquisition on gaming, Electronic Arts has made it known they want to acquire Take-2. EA is best known for their sports titles headlined by Madden, The Sims and Burnout franchises. EA is currently the largest game publisher in the industry. Take-Two is best known for their Grand Theft Auto, Bioshock and 2K sports gaming franchise. The board at Take-Two has rejected EA's 2 billion dollar offer so now EA is taking it's offer to the stock holders. Take-Two has been in trouble as of late but the success of BioShock and the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 4 has kept the company a float.
That this means to gamers is you would see GTA and future RockStar developed games become multiplatform games. BioShock would be coming to the PS3 and future GTAs and LA Noire would be coming to the Xbox 360. EA does not believe in excluding anyone from the party anymore. This part of the merger would be a very good thing for gamers.
The bad part would be that EA's only sports competitor would end up disappearing. You may end up seeing only one game in Football, College Basketball, Hockey and Baseball. The lack of a serious contender has not helped the quality of the Madden series. This would open the door for Activision to get more involved in sports titles since they are EA's biggest rival.
I think this deal will go tough because it's a smart move for the Take-Two share holders. EA is willing to spend way more than Take-Two is actually worth and after GTA4 comes out the future of Take-Two is murky. This may hurt the quality of the sports games released but I think for most gamers it's worth the sacrifice to get GTA 4 and BioShock multiplatform.
