Is it time to buy a PS3?

As a responsible gamer I will eventually be picking up a PS3 but I have not had the desire to do that just yet.  The biggest problem for me has always been price.  I can afford to buy a PS3 but spending $400 or $500 on one has not been appealing to me.  Still I think it's time to look at that option again.

The best question to ask yourself when buying a game console is: what games should I get?  This is the reason you are buying a game console right?  Well if so there should be some good games.  I would say that Heavenly Sword is a definite must play for me but it smells like a rental.  Any other games?  I may like Grand Turismo 5 Prologue and it may be a console purchase but is it that $400 game (game worth buy a console for)?  Probably not.  So the games on the PS3 are either already on the 360 or not something I care to play for the most part.

While playing games on game console makes sense, I can still use the PS3 as a media extender or BluRay player.  That is a valid option.  Personally I really do like watching movies in high definition and am sad that HD-DVD has lost the war.  Still it's time to move on and accept it's a dead format.  Is BluRay the true winner for just the next format for now?  Tough to say.  Still I'm not ready to go buy a ton of BluRay movies.

I guess I have to say I'm still not sold yet.  I want there to be backwards compatibility in the PS3 before I make the purchase.  Does that mean I have to buy the 80GB $499 model?  Maybe it but at that price I can wait a little longer.
