Finished Rainbow Six Vegas 2
I have played every single Rainbow Six game to be published on a Microsoft game console and I have to say the latest installment is an excellent game offline but misses the mark online. The game comes stacked with content considering you get to play through seven fairly long campaign levels plus all the multiplayer maps are available for Terrorist Hunt. This time around using the vision camera to map your face to the game allows you to be in the face of the lead in the ingle player game as well as online. This plus the leveling up features of your character and character customization build to a very enjoyable experience.
The campaign in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 acts mostly as a prequel to the events of the first game. You are in charge of a team working to thwart the terrorist attacks in Los Vegas with the two Rainbow teammates from the first game. This is a bit confusing if the story of the first game is not fresh in your memory. Still the game starts in Vegas and you get o to play through some typical Vegas areas like convention centers, cassino's and train station? Well it really isn't a Rainbow Six game without a mission in a train station, oil refinery or a mansion in the tropics. I have to say none of the encounters are extremely memorable but they all are very fun and are what any Rainbow Six vet would expect. The campaign feels a bit like an expansion pack at first but depth of the levels will easily change your mind over time.
As you play in verses matches, terrorist hunt or the campaign you will receive XP points for killing terrorists. Depending how you kill a terrorist you will gain additional XP points. As you again XP points you level up your character which allows you to unlock new guns, armor and cloths for your character. You ranking then is not limited to your online verses matches so someone that plays a ton of online matches will have the same gear as someone who plays a ton offline. I think this is a great idea for leveling up a character and unlocking items since it allows for a fairer online experience. In previous Rainbow Six games playing online because too one sided as experienced players had the better gear so they were harder to kill. This new model should help level that playing field.
On previous Terrorist Hunt incarnations you ended up playing as one man hunting down several terrorist on a map. These matches were a lot easier if you played with a friend because it helped even out the odds. This time around when playing Terrorist Hunt offline you get to play with the AI teammates from the campaign. Now Terrorist Hunt feels like an extension of the campaign. This change will easily extend the life of this game for many people.
So far the online verses match have been a complete disappointment for me. Most of the different game types out there are limiting the respawns to either one or two per match. This means if you're playing a ranked match you may die early then have to sit and wait for the match to end. I think this will limit the accessibility of the online matches to only the hardcore online FPS fans. It has definitely kept me from playing much online.
Overall this is another good Rainbow Six game that is worth playing. The does tend to reuse a little too much from the first game in the series but makes up for it with a lot more content and some really cool features. I really got a kick out of seeing my face on my character while I was hugging a wall. The game offers some good online co-op as well so I hope to test that out as well. It's too bad the story was a bit too confusing early on because once you figure out what's actually going on it gets good.
