Does the Xbox 360 need Wii controls?
In short: No! Still, it looks like it is very likely that Microsoft will be unveiling a new controller for the Xbox 360 that will use gesture controls and be shaped like a TV remote. Microsoft has looked at the gaming phenomenon, Nintendo Wii, and is trying their best to ape the game console's most notable feature: the waggle controller.
I think this has to be some dumb witted marketing idea that will end up making a laughing stock of Microsoft and the Xbox 360. Is the Nintendo Wii that great or is it a cheap game console that is so hard to find that owning one impress your yuppie friends and/or make the other soccer moms in the neighborhood jealous? I tend to think it's a trendy device with very few games that will keep anyone above the age of 25 very amused for more than a couple months. It's the perfect game console for those that don't like to play anything that takes skill.
So why is Microsoft trying to copy the Wii? Instead of look at itself and realizing what it does wrong and fixing those glaring issues Microsoft is trying to pretend adding waggle support will woo over the soccer moms and yuppies. What Microsoft should be doing is fixed Xbox Live so that the racists and jerks can't play with normal people. Then Microsoft should look at making the Xbox 360 have a 0.01% failure rate. How about making a game console that actually works 99.99% of the time? After they fix Xbox Live and the failure rate Microsoft should then look at actually spend money to market their casual games on Xbox Live Arcade. Spend some money to show off Luminess Live, the new Pac Man, Uno and all those other super casual pick up and play arcade titles. Oh, and one last point....selling at $399 $349 is not a mass market price that will cause your game console to sell like hot cakes.
I know this post is falling on deaf ears but man it would be nice if the guys that build Microsoft Office and Bob would step away from the video gaming aspect of Microsoft's business. If you haven't noticed Microsoft has been making some really bad decisions lately and should have been way more up front about their problems. It's already a running joke that Xbox Live is full of racists 13 year olds so piling on the hardware failures really didn't help the situation. Microsoft also has to realize that killing off the Xbox 360 and starting the next game console generation in 2009 is not going to help their reputation either. I don't care if it's called the Xbox 720, I'm still not buying one till I know the hardware works.
