March NPDs - What shortage?

Another month and here we have another set of numbers to chew over.  By far the big winner is Nintendo, selling over 721,000 units last month.  Nintendo is not only selling a ton of units but is also selling a few copies (264.1K) of Guitar Hero 3, placing it seventh on the software charts.  Nintendo also had the number one software title with Super Smash Bros: Brawl selling 2.7 million copies.  It is obvious that Nintendo was hording units for the release of Brawl considering they almost sold twice as many as they did last month.

The folks in Redmond can breath a little easier this month since they narrowly squeezed by Sony selling 262,000 Xbox 360 in March.  This is a very small improvement from last month but a fairly nice improvement from last year when they only sold 199,000 units.  In Microsoft's press release they seem very happy that they beat Sony this month and that their sales in Europe have doubled since their price cut.  Still in a fight against Sony, Microsoft is barely winning and against Nintendo they barely are fighting.  Microsoft needs to cut their price if that want to sell more units in April.

Games for the 360 continue to sell well, taking 4 spots in the top ten.  The 360 version of RainbowSix: Vegas 2 sold 752,300 copies and Amy of Two sold 606,100 units finishing second and third respectfully.  MLB 2K8 and COD4 placed 8th and 9th both selling 237,000 copies.

Sony can't be too upset they didn't beat Microsoft since they are nipping at the 360's heels selling 257,000 units.  That is almost double what the PS3 sold last year and over 50K more than the 360 sold last year at the same price.  Still this is a drop in sales for the PS3 and could mean the BluRay boost is over.  I'm a bit surprised that the PS3 version of RainbowSix: Vegas 2 did not make the top ten in sales.  The only PS3 title to break the top ten was Army of Two selling 224,900 units to place 10th.  Sony needs to boost games sales some how because it seems people are just not buying PS3 games.  Maybe the release of the Dual Shock 3 will help get people to play more PS3 games.

What about the  PS2?   It sold 216,000 units last month which is a bit of a return to reality for the system.  Sony needs to kill off the PS2 in an effort to get these customers to belly up and buy a PS3.
