Two console home
So I've been thinking about picking up a PS3 for a while now and now that HD-DVD is dead and there really isn't a whole lot new to play I decided it's time to make the purchase. I went over to my least favorite big box store and picked one of the several units on display (over 16 in stock) and also picked up a HDMI cable and Unreal Tournament 3. At the register I was warned to buy a service plan because "this product has a tendency to over heat." I'm guessing the clerks are giving that line to tell anyone who buys a PS3 or Xbox 360 because I'm not aware of any PS3s over heating.
So once the kids were in bed and after I watched Big Brother I started the setup. This process shouldn't have been too complex but something was not working. I immediately connected my PS3 to my TV via the HDMI cable I bought. Well when I finally booted up the system I was having serious display issues. The video was flickering between a black screen and the blue screen I normally see where there is no input going to the tv. Eventually it went to the PS3 setup screen so I could setup my PS3. All was not well through, now the screen would gradually go crappy and eventually go to all snow.
So I'm thinking I've either got a bad PS3, bad cable or a bad HDMI port on my TV. Needless to say I'm a bit pissed. I struggle to get through the console setup then power down the PS3 and decide to try top move the HDMI cable to the 360 and see what happens. At first it all looks good then all of a sudden I start getting screen flickering and the display goes all crazy. So it's not the PS3 (thank god!) and now it's either the TV or the cable (please be the cable!!!!).
My next test is to connect the PS3 to the TV using the hdmi cable for the 360. I did move the cable to the HDMI 2 port and plugged that into the PS3. Amazingly this worked perfectly. I was able to finish the setup of my PS3 so it would connect to my wireless network and I'm now on the Playstation Network. So now I needed to see if the cable was an issue for the Xbox 360. Surprisingly enough the cable worked totally fine for the 360. This was a bit bizarre considering the cable was advertised for the PS3 but I tested it out playing Devil May Cry on my 360 and had no problems.
So now I'm a proud owner of an Xbox 360 and a PS3. I wonder if my xbox fanboy card has been voided (not likely) but I'm looking forward to checking our the new system. I still justify the purchase because I needed a BluRay player to watch HD movies and I will be playing a few games on the PS3. I'm looking forward to Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Turismo 5 and Haze but I need to checkout Resistance, Heavenly Sword and Lair (now with analog support). I'll give the console a few weeks before I give some more feedback on how I like the system. It is taking time to get used to how light the controller is and the whole button layout.
