Grand Turismo 5: Prologue Impressions
I trend to really enjoy racing simulations so now that GT 5 Prologue is now available of course I downloaded the game from the PlayStation Store. Now I haven't played a Grand Turismo game before but I've been told the series is the pinnacle of racing sims. I have played a lot of Forza Motorsport 2 on my 360 so I will be comparing my experience in Forza to GT 5: Prologue.
The first thing that jumps out to me is how beautiful the main menu's background is and how nice the menu system works. Some parts of this game are absolutely beautiful are really show off the graphical power of the PS3. Most of the still scenes where they show your current car in some exotic location are incredible.
Now I've cleared the the C races and have gotten a few races under my belt I can see the appeal of Gran Torimso. The game is an enjoyable experience for anyone that likes racing games. By excluding real time damage you are making the game much more accessible to the casual fan. The AI you are racing against on the early levels is actually prone to foolish mistakes and doesn't run a perfect race only slower.
My biggest knock against the game has to be it's horrible default controls. I never like the idea of hitting the X button to accelerate or using the right analog to accelerate and decelerate. I eventually remapped the controls to the Forza layout and eventually had to change that because of the horrible R2 and L2 on the Sixaxis. I'm now using R1 and L1 following the UT3's controls by avoiding the actual triggers on the PS3 controller.
Now GT 5 Prologue is really just a supped up demo that is a stop gap made to hold over PS3 owners. I still feel the game is well worth the price and hopefully will allow the developers to adjust the game to user feedback. This game still need's to improve the graphics in the race and it would be great if I could modify my car like I can in Forza. Still I see Forza as a much more hard core racer than GT and think that people looking for a more forgiving experience will enjoy Gran Turismo more.
