Looking Forward to Gears of War 2?
Well if you are prepare to be bombarded with articles and PR hype about the Fall '08 release. If you missed the cover story in Game Informer or the New York Comic Con panel you can still see some more Gears 2 related announcements on May 9th. Considering they guys that brought you Halo 3 themed Mountain Dew are in charge of the marketing for Gears 2 I'm thinking we will be hearing a whole lot about the next installment of this franchise.
Like any red blooded Xbox 360 owner I'm excited for the next Gear of War game but I do wonder if the hype will overshadow the game. We don't have as much time till Gears of War 2 launches and without a demo to show off the game I expect to see lots of commercials and some tie in deals with either convenience stores or soft drinks. I may even rent Unreal Tournament 3 for the 360 since it will have a Gears related surprise. Better not be this.
I for one hope that Epic can stop Microsoft from whoring out the Gears IP. I wonder how much more successful Halo 3 would have been perceived if it wasn't so over hyped. The fact is Gears 2 has a chance to sell millions of copies even without a huge media buzz because so many of the original fans will come back and buy the next copy. All they need to do is get a few game magazine covers and run a couple adds on TV. Advertise to your core audience and avoid the crazy media blitz Halo 3 received. My mom doesn't need to know Gears 2 is coming out this fall, she's not going to buy a copy.
