Unreal Tournament 3 Impressions (PS3)
Deciding which game would be my first one for the PS3 was not an easy decision to make. I knew I was going to download GT 5 Prologue but I needed something to play the second I got the system hooked up. Since I'm an online FPS fan I decide to give UT3 the nod over Resistance (which now should be priced lower). I played a little Unreal on the original Xbox and had a blast playing the multiplayer so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed.
I decided to play the single player game just to get a feel for the controls and the weapons. After watching a ton of cut scenes and missing out on playing what would have been a cool opening mission, I launched into the first mission which was a glorified bot match. After easily winning that I headed online and have not been back since.
At first I was very concerned with the online play. I had a really hard time finding a match to join with more than four people. Sure the games were crazy fast twitch action with no lag but still. I was wondering if I'd missed out and UT3 never got much of a community on the PS3. Well then I decided to play a few Team Deathmatch games instead of the default Deathmatch and low and behold now I'm playing full 8v8 matches. I played in some really good matches too where we traded wins and I even got my first friend request.
The one thing I did notice was there was no voice in these games. Since I don't have a headset yet for the PS3 it really doesn't matter. One thing I did noticed was in all the games I player there was no trash talk, racists or annoying prepubescents in my matches. Quite the change from playing Halo 3. I'm not sure if voice is just blocked in this game to get a better ping rate or if no one has a headset. I may pick up a blue tooth headset soon but for now it seems like I don't need one.
As for graphics in this game, it's definitely built on the same engine as Gears of War. It has all the same environment shininess. I would not say it looks better than the best 360 games but it definitely looks good. It will be interesting to see of the 360 version looks better since it's probably built on the improved Unreal 3 engine.
I think anyone who is looking for fast fun FPS action on the PS3 will be happy buying this game. I tend to think the team matches are a lot more fun in UT3 than in Halo 3. I like the different weapons and feel you are never really out matched by any one gun in the game. Since there is no ranked match making you are often thrown into matches will people of varying skill levels but so far I have not been in any overly one sided matches.
