Welcome to Liberty City, Part 1

I decided that to really have an opinion on the Grand Theft Auto franchise I should give GTA 4 a play through and see if it lives up to all the hype, good and bad.  I plan to blog about my entire experience in the game so I can share the game experience with my readers.  After seeing the early reviews and hearing how the game doesn't run at 720p on the PS3 and how the PS3 version occasionally locks up, I decided to get the 360 version of the game. So after lunch yesterday I stopped by the local big box store and picked up my copy of GTA4.

You start the game watching the opening video of you on a freighter just about to enter Liberty City (New York), talking to a friend about how your cousin is living the American dream.  The main character is Nikko and he is eastern European.  He talks about the war and seems to have gotten into organized crime back in his native country.  He talks of his cousin's race car, mansion and girl friends.  As you get off the boat and your cousin picks you up you learn he's been exaggerating the truth.  Turns out he lives in a cheap apartment about the size of a matchbox.

This is about when you get to take control of the game and start playing the game.  So far the game has been fairly calm.  My first couple missions have been to take my cousin to work, pick up his receptionist and her sister at the bus station and take them to her apartment, buy some new clothes, took the sister on a date to a bowling alley and then I helped my cousin out with some loan sharks.  This is where you get to learn the melee combat system.

So far the game has been a lot of driving around and trying to get from point A to point B.  I have not done much exploring but I did find a flare on the ground during my date mission.  That allowed me to make a molotov cocktail which was very useful during the loan shark mission.  The driving system is good but I'm not a fan of driving in 3rd person so I've managed to run over 4 pedestrians and have wreaked two cars.

I plan on posting more and more about my experiences in Liberty City as I complete the game.  I will be trying some of the online modes, another good reason to not buy the PS3 version.  I will try not to get into too much detail about the main missions but I do want to let people that may not play the game have a good idea about what this game is all about.  My wife asked me if I would need my racing wheel to play the game.  Obviously she has no idea what this game is about.  Sure you can steal a car but it's more than just that.
