Welcome to Liberty City, Part 4
After spending about 20 hours in the game I can really see the appeal to this game. I've yet to unlock all of the islands of the game yet these islands feel huge with tons of unique people running around. Sometimes the AI is stupid and bizarre traffic jams sprout out of no where but it just adds to how real this city actually feels. From a pure game environment there is no game that can match the open world feel of Grand Theft Auto 4.
When you look at the technical issues this game faces with frame rate drops and the jaggyness of the textures you can over look these issues because the world is so huge and unique. This isn't Assassin's Creed where you five five different person variations duplicated all over the environment saying one of three possible line of dialog. In GTA4 there is way more dialog and I have not noticed the same saying constantly repeated.
The story in the game is not Oscar worth so far but it is compelling and pulls you along through the game. There are so many missions you need to complete and so many new associates you end up working with it's impressive. I've hit one of the twists in the game's story so I'm looking forward to see how it turns out. It is really interesting to see how the game rips apart the American dream and really emphasizes on the negative aspects.
To keep you away from the other islands, Liberty City is under terrorist alert and people aren't allowed to travel between islands. As you progress through the game the islands open up and the local news, Jackal News (Fox News), blames opening up the island on pressure from the liberals. There are also commercials about Fleasa (Visa), a credit card company and touts the fact you'll never get yourself out of debt. All these little jabs at society are an ongoing theme in the game. Everyone of the characters is in search of their American dream and they all end up resorting to crime to get ahead.
I have to say I'm really impressed with GTA4 as a very fun game that has a story and a point to express but tends to put you is positions you can't justify. You play as a cold blooded murderer that will not hesitate to kill cops, hookers or civilians. The only solution to any problem is to pull out your gun and blow everyone away. This game is a perfect game that pushes the boundaries and is no way suitable for minors to play. The only problem is that kids will get this game and most of them will probably get their parent to buy it for them.
