BluRay player sales down
With the latest NPD group number it seems that BluRay standalone player sales are down since HD-DVD dropped out of the HD format battle. There are no specific numbers but sales dropped 40% from January to February but were up 2% from February to March. Still it seems clear that the reason people were not adopting an HD disk format was not because there were competing formats but because of a lack of interest.
In all honesty I think watching HD movies is marginally improving the enjoyment of watching movies. I tend to think watching TV in HD is vastly improving the enjoyment of the viewer but DVD vs BluRay is not that much of an improvement. I think if you are willing to buy a $1500 TV then you should undefinability buy a BluRay player but if you are budget conscientious then you shouldn't bother. You are better off buying a dvd player that supports HDMI.
The real issues is that not only is the price of the HD players $400 to $500 but the cost of most BluRay movies is $30. To charge that much of a premium on BluRay movies one would expect a much better viewing experience. Fact is it doesn't really matter than much unless you have a top line TV. If you can afford one of those TVs then you can obvious afford BluRay player and the cost of buying new movies.
