Holiday Gaming Weekend

This is one of those rare weekends where I got to play several games on multiple gaming systems.  I can finally say that I have now played all three current generation game consoles: Xbox 360, PS3 and the Wii.  Over this past weekend I was able to spend some time playing the Wii at my wife's uncles cabin.

I'm going to start with the games I played on the Wii.  I first tried to see if I could get my 3 1/2 year old to play me at Wii Sports.  We started out playing Tennis but this ended up being too confusing.  Having four players on the screen made it a bit difficult to get the timing right for when to swing.  We next moved to Baseball since he really is obsessed about baseball right now.  He really couldn't get the timing down for when to swing and go bored fairly quickly.  Lastly we tried Wii Mario Kart using the wheel attachment.  Holding down the 2 button for gas a bit too hard for him and he really couldn't steer too well.  He was not very interested in the games and wanted to play something else.

I did get to play with my wife as well.  We played Tennis, Baseball and Bowling from Wii Sports as well as Mario Kart.   The only game my wife was able to beat me at was Tennis.  This was probably because she served twice and we both held serve in our best of three match.  Getting the timing right seems to be the main theme with Tennis and Baseball.  Baseball was a very simple game where one person pitches and the other bats.  The outfield is controlled by the game so you don't have to field any hits or worry about catching and throwing the ball.  This was a fun game but seemed very random.  Bowling seemed to be just about knowing where to stand.  I shot a 180 on my first attempt without really trying.  Playing Mario Kart was ok but I was disappointed with the button controls.

After playing with Colin and my wife I really decided that we do not need a Wii just yet.  There are no games I'm excited to play and I really didn't like the pointing controls.  Since it's a bit too hard for Colin I see no reason to get a Wii.  Erin and I felt the games were ok but since we couldn't play them with Colin we really don't have a need for the Wii.  It might be fun for some drinking games but it's not something we would use.

So not only have I been playing the Wii but I've been playing some PS3 exclusives.   First I started out with Heavenly Sword since I like the hack and slash games and thought this game looked good.  So far it has it's good moments and it's horrible moments.  The sixaxis features like controlling a shield in flight after thrown totally suck.  Controlling the flight of arrows fired totally sucks as well.  The other combat is good but the games  has to few of that compared to the other stuff so far.

Then I started playing Uncharted: Drake's Fortune which I was told is the best PS3 game out there.  So far it's actually good.  I can enjoy a nice action game with a story right out of Indiana Jones and game play from Tomb Raider.  I haven't gotten too far but so far I like this game and will be playing more of it.

Finally I finished GTA IV over the weekend.  I ended up really liking the game for it's story and immersing game world.  I plan on putting up a large post on my final impression of the game later this week.  I've completed the main story line but only have 80% of the game completed.  So even after 61 hours there is still a good amount of work to get done.  Since there will be new download missions I'll be playing this game for a long time I think.  I may have to jump online and see how fun that can be.
