GRID Demo Impressions

In a year that was looking very light for the racing genera GRID looks to pickup the slack.  From the makers of Dirt, Codemasters, comes their next excellent racing game.  This time around it looks like the off roading Dirt engine has been enhanced and is now perfected for the track racing.

This should not surprise anyone who has played Dirt but GRID looks incredible.  I downloaded the PS3 demo and was throughly impressed with how the game looks.  If anything this game really emphasizes how lack luster Gran Turismo 5: Prologue looks while racing.  This is easily the best looking PS3 game I have played.

The driving controls on the PS3 is a bit tragic though.  I can express how much I dislike the trigger buttons on the PS3 controller.  I was able to modify the controls to use the R1/L1 buttons instead of the R2/L2 buttons.  This made the game a little more enjoyable but I still found the controls a bit loose.  I also found that the e-break was a bit too strong causing me to spin out while just tapping the O button.  Hopefully this will be resolved before the fina; version goes to market.  At the very least you can adjust all the driving controls in the game so you can get the best setup for yourself.

I have to admit I'm really excited to get the final version of this game.  I'll probably download the 360 version of the demo to see how it played on that system.  I find the 360 controller a much better controller and add that with achievements it makes it clear which version I should buy.  I may change my mind after playing the 360 version but I may have to find a PS3 controller shaped like the 360 controller.
