Sony Introduces Pay Service: Qore
Sony has just introduced a subscriber service for PSN that will allow those that subscribe to get exclusive demos, videos and download content. This is being labeled an "interactive gaming program" for the PS3 but they don't get into how. So far the service will be $3 a month or $25 a year which makes it a little more than half the price of a Xbox Live Gold account.
I'm not very surprised that Sony has decided that they will need income from their users to help pay for the cost on maintaining PSN. Since Sony doesn't control the servers used to host multiplayer games they really can't charge for match making. They do host the demos, trailers and other download content on their servers for the PSN Store so they have decided to charge a premium for access to some of that content. I would assume that what they will do is make this content exclusive for Qore subscribers for a limited time then eventually make it available for the non-paying PSN members.
This really makes no difference to me because I don't need to get this content. I tend to think demos and trailers are nice to have but not something I must have. I don't see a purpose in paying for two console pay services and Xbox Live is a much better value. I think this will fail miserably and end up with Sony expanding the paid content to eventually include more features we used to get for free.
