Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out tonight
Now if there are one or two premier exclusive PS3 tiles out there, Metal Gear Solid 4 is definitely one of them. This stealth action game has been released on other games consoles in the past but it is really only known for their Play Station versions. The final installment of this story is about to hit stores at midnight tonight and is the biggest PS3 game launch to date.
It will be interesting to see if the turnout for MGS4 will be as huge as some hope considering all the fanfare around this release. It is definitely nothing compared to the Halo 3 release but there are release parties planned and events scheduled to kick off the release. Some events have been canceled (the Tokyo event by Konomi) but still people feel this game will make the resurrection of the Play Station brand.
Most die hard Sony fans have been saying that MGS4 and Final Fantasy XIII will be the titles to bring the PS3 past the Xbox 360 in sales. The release of MGS4 is the first step in this process. The question is will it matter? Metal Gear Solid has never been as popular as the Halo or Grand Theft Auto franchises. The Metal Gear Solid games are known for their solid fan base but not as a world beater when it comes to sales. This is the first AAA exclusive for the PS3 so it will be interesting to see if this release will appeal to the core PS3 install base as well as the die hards.
I tend to think that Metal gear Solid is not my kind of game. It's a stealth action game about sneaking around, trying to stay out of site from the guards. I'm more of a guns blazing kind of guy and really don't enjoy sneaking around. So Metal gear Solid 4 will not be making an appearance on my PS3. I don't see this launch selling new consoles to new PS3 owners. If anything I see the hardcore fans maybe offloading their 60GB models to buy the 80GB MGS4 themed models. Overall this title will sell well but no where near other big titles this year like GTA4, Mario Kart Wii or RainbowSix: Vegas 2.
