Another month's NPDs and another month the Xbox 360 finishes last among current gen consoles. This time around the Wii finished first with 675K, the PS3 was second with 208K and the 360 took last with 186K units sold. I think there is not doubt that the Wii is on the verge of becoming this generation's PS2. They have the best selling console and have the most titles in the top ten.
Microsoft can feel a little happy that they managed to have the best selling game in May with GTA IV selling twice as many copies as the PS3 version. Microsoft can't be anything but concerned when you look at the rest of the top ten and there are no other 360 titles on the list.
Not only did the Wii win the consoles sales this week it also held five of the top ten games sold. Mario Kart Wii finished second on the list and was followed by Wii Fit. The only non-Nintendo game in those five Wii games happens to be Guitar Hero III. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues. In May there were not many games available but June brings a hefty bunch of games for PS3 and 360.
Sony has to be very pleased because they obviously got a minor bump from GTA IV. The system didn't sell as many copies as the 360 but they sold over 400K and one has to think some of those sales were accompanied with consoles. Compared to last year, the PS3 has sold 120K more consoles and got a 20K bump over last month. Considering that Metal gear Solid 4 is coming out in June I think that the PS3 will have another good month next month as well.
I have to say it's no surprise that Microsoft's head of marketing is stepping down. Here we are in a the second down month in a row for the Xbox 360 after Microsoft has such a great Q4 of 2007. Microsoft has to realize that their console does not compete against the PS3 very well at $349 considering the PS3 is a BluRay player for only $50 more. What Microsoft needs to do is cut the price ASAP or they will continue to lose ground to the PS3. Unfortunately I don't see that happening before E3. They better cut the price by more than $30 at E3 too or else they will not see much of a bump in sales.
