In game messaging finally arrives on the PS3
If you haven't turned on your PS3 for a while it might be time to check out the new 2.41 patch. This will now introduce you to trophies (achievements) and the ability to view your friends list and send messages while playing a game. For the Sony die hards this is the feature list they have been waiting for so they can claim the same features as the Xbox 360.
Now after testing this out I'm a bit confused how this will work with all the games I have already played. In Uncharted I earned some "achievements" but are they now trophies? Will all games support trophies going forward? My trophy score is currently zero so I'm sure there are a few folks I know that will love to pass me up considering they can't come close to passing my gamer score on the 360.
It will be interesting to see if people will abandon the 360 to play online for free using the PS3. from what I can tell the PS3 service is still a few years behind the 360 when it comes to online games. it will be interesting to see what is coming to the 360's Live service as well and if it will truly raise the bar again. Sony is making a big push towards online gaming but does it matter? Sony's service is free and their service kind of feels like you are getting what you are paying for.
