E3: Sony's Conferense
Well it's now Sony's turn and at least they have something to say. By far the biggest games they showed off are Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, MAG, God of War 3 and a bunch of 3rd party games that aren't exclusives. The big news has to be that we'll be seeing a $100 price cut come to the 80 GB PS3 in November and that the movie and tv shows will be available on PSN. They referred to the 80GB as their core model so it's unclear what this means the 40GB model.
God of War 3 will be coming to the PS3 in 2009 and there will be a tailer up. Resistance 2 got the most play and looks really good. There will be a PSP version coming out as well. Another Ratchet game is coming to PSN and there will be a PSP bundle pack coming as well with Size Matters. They closed with MAG which is a squad based shooter with support for 256 players online.
The movie service looks interesting with the option to rent or buy movies. It seems that you will only be able to buy SD movies but can buy HD TV shows. So far the partnership is with Sony Pictures, Fox Film, MGM, Lion's Gate, Warner, Disney, Paramount, and Turner Entertainment. This content is currently all available immediately too so if you have a PS3 you can go download a movie now. Also this content is portable so you can download a movie then watch it on your PSP.
They did go into home a little more and show off some of features that will one day be available. The service does look interesting but it is still does not have a release date. It still looks very much like second life where you walk around a 3D environment. They have also announced that you will have access to the PSN from your computer. Did see if this mean they will have queued up downloading just like the new Xbox Live or if you can download to your PC.
Overall there was some good stuff from the Sony conference but nothing that will excite me. I'm glad they are offering movie downloads and I like the quasi price cut on the 80 GB model. There were no big game announcements considering everyone already knew God of War 3 was on the way and Resistance 2 was already announced before E3. Really this is just the first year the PS3 has some quality games coming to it. Unfortunately most of these games are already on the 360 (BioShock, Eternal Sonata) or will be released on both consoles (Resident Evil 5, Mirror's Edge, Fallout 3).
