Too Human Demo Impressions
So I downloaded the demo and decided to give the game a try. This is the game that ran so poorly at E3 '06 and was shown on G4, it was thought the game might get canceled. Well it's E3 '08 and now the game I demoed is very different than the one I saw on TV two years ago. First off Too Human is a twist to the Nordic mythology and you play as the Baldur.
This game is a very different type of dungeon crawling hack and slash because of it's sci-fi story line and unique controls. First off the game looks great with no slow down what so ever. The game environments truly are beautiful with a lots of detail. The story has the ability to get it's hooks in you as well. It is clear you do not start the demo at the beginning of the game and you are given a meaty chunk of story in the hour long demo. You get to play as one of five different character types that are have different advantages. I played through as a Champion which is the balanced character model between melee and ranged combat.
The game play is where I have to say I'm the most concerned about. It's a dungeon crawler that spits out lute for you to grab and power up your character but for a hack and slash they have neutered the combat. You see you do not hit a button to swing your sword. You don't seem to have the ability to block attacks either. You simply move the right analog stick in the direction of the enemy you wish to attack then you character skates across the screen to hit that enemy. It's almost like point and click combat.
Now I may be very worried about the game controls for this game but it doesn't mean I'm not going to run out and pre-order this game. I'm a sucker for games like this and I think this game will do well by me for a few hours. I'm hoping the combat is just dumbed down for the demo and that later on you'll get some more interesting attacks.
