June NPDs are in and PS3 has a good month
Well it was clear that if Sony was ever going to have a huge month it would be the month Metal Gear Solid 4 was shipped. Sony had their 4th best month for the PS3 selling over 405,500 consoles in North America. That's a jump of 200,000 from last month which helped sell 775,000 copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 which was the best selling game in June and the only PS3 game in the top ten.
Nintendo had another stellar month selling 666,700 Wii consoles and four of the top ten games. Wii Fit and Wii Play both sold well over 350,000 copies and Mario Kart sold 322,000 copies. The big news from this month's NPDs is that the Wii is officially the #1 console in the US. So far this generation the Wii has sold 10,853,000, the Xbox 360 10,492,000 and the PS3 4,853,000 in North America. It is very clear that there are plenty of Wii consoles being shipped to the US but they still are not meeting demand.
Microsoft only managed to sell 219,000 consoles in the five week month of June. Microsoft saw good sales for Battlefield: Bad Company selling 346,000 and Ninja Gaiden II selling 372,000 copies. It seems Microsoft is very content being in last place. It seems very clear that most gamers that want a 360 have already purchased one. Sales have been sagging behind the PS3 for most of the year and Microsoft has not been willing to adjust their price to reach a broader market. The quasi price cut of the premium model to $299 is only temporary because those 20GB models are being replaced with a 60GB model that will sell at a higher price.
Now each company has come out with their own spin touting how great they are and how pleased they are with the June NPD numbers. What each company doesn't want to talk about is their flaws. Even though the Wii is selling tons of consoles they can't seem to support 3rd party developers. LEGO Indiana Jones made the list this month in the 8th spot but no other 3rd party game was there. Microsoft is in last place but they announced they have shipped 20 million consoles world wide. Microsoft's video game division will also have a profitable year for the very first time. It is clear that Microsoft is more interested in making a profit than expanding their brand. Why put all this emphasis on casual mass market games at E3 yet not have a mass market price? Really Sony is the only one that should be happy. They are selling almost twice as many consoles in 2008 as they did in 2007. The core gamers are returning to Sony but they aren't buying software. It's safe to say that the 360 version of battlefield sold at least 100,000 copies more than the PS3 version. PS3 is selling more but it seems they are still losing the cross platform battle.
