Movies on PS3 Review
So after a couple days of the service being available I decided to give the service a spin. Sony has announced a partnership with several movie and TV studios to provide they content in the Play Station Store. Right now there is the option to rent movies or buy movies and TV shows.
Unlike the 360's movie service, Sony's movie store allows you to rent or buy movies. So far you can rent SD or HD movies but you can only purchases SD movies. When renting an HD movie you have the option to download the 720p or 1080p versions of the movie. So far the HD content is a bit limited and the rental offerings is nice but limited.
I was very surprised to see that there are movies that you can buy and movies you can rent but most movies you can't do one or the other. I wanted to rent a specific Sony Pictures movie but it turned out it was only available for purchase. If you rent a movie it will last on your system for 14 days or 24 hours after it has been started. The prices seem very comparable to renting SD or HD content elsewhere.
The TV shows on the service are just for purchase. So far the only content available for purchase is SD. I'm not sure why since I know for a fact some of this content is available in HD on other services.
One feature that is nice to have that others can't offer is the ability to download a movie or tv show and watch it on your PSP. It you have a PSP then this will allow you to take your content on the road.
Sony really needed to get this service out the door. Right now the service is very immature but I expect that Sony will support the service and grow the service internationally. I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of HD content for purchase but I suppose Sony is protecting their BluRay technology. For now Sony has a competent service but will need to get more HD content to really compete with the other digital distribution services.
