Playing with guns, swords and pads
This week has been a very solid week where I got to play Soul Caliber IV, Ninja Gaiden II DLC, Geometry Wars Evolved 2, Madden '09 demo and Battlefield: Bad Company. Now if you haven't been listening we are about to get some really great games for the rest of the year. August is always when this juggernaut starts and normally runs into January. In August alone we will be getting Madden '09, Too Human, Castle Crashers, Baird, Bionic Commando: Rearmed and the re-do Galaga Legions. I will be playing all of these titles so I'm hoping someone buys me an Xbox Live points card.
So far I've only give Soul Caliber IV a few hours of my time. I'm pretty green at the game and so far have not been impressed by the combos or the general game mechanics. It's a nice looking game that seems be running well but is a bit boring to play. When I picked up Virtua Fighter 5 or DOA4 I barely put the controller down the first couple days. Right now I'm thinking Soul Caliber IV is not that type of game. So far the only opponents to give me a hard time are the Star Wars characters.
So after the DLC was removed from Live then put back on Live I'm now playing the mission mode. So far I've made it through nine or ten karma missions. The next couple missions are going to be a pain in the but. I have seven or so missions left to complete on Acolyte but I've hit some real buggers that have stalled my progress. On the Survival missions I have yet to earn a meddle but I've only played two missions. I also found out what the criteria was for earning a meddle so hopefully I can pick one up this weekend.
I downloaded the new Geometry Wars Evolved 2 last night and it's as awesome as the original. This version comes with six different modes to play. GeoWars was the launch arcade game that most people considered the best 360 launch title. This dual stick shooter was the rage. Evolved 2 takes it up a notch by adding a bunch of really fun modes to the game. You need to unlock each mode, which I did last night, by playing the mode you unlocked. There is a new multiplier element to the game now that really helps you score tons of points. I have managed to score a million points in almost every game mode. A free demo is available on Live so check it out.
The Madden '09 demo came out yesterday as well. The demo only allows you to play the last minute and 30 seconds of the super bowl as the giants. It's 4th and 1 and you're down 4 points so you need to score. The thing I got out of this was the game looks really good but still plays like Madden. There is a this Madden IQ test at the start of the demo to track how well you are at passing and running offense and defense. I was All Madden at running, All Pro passing and Rookie at both rush and pass defense. Not sure how they plan in incorporating this into the game but if it means fairer games then I'm all for it. Madden has gotten to complex for me and I'd like a simpler game.
I think I'm about done playing Bad Company. It's been a fun ride but I think I'll be trading this one in for something new real soon. Not sure if it will be used for Madden '09 or Too Human.
