Rumor: Xbox 360 Prices Cuts Coming Next Month
This is strictly a rumor but I think it is true. Next month we will start seeing price cuts across all Xbox 360 models. The Elite will drop from $449 to $399, Pro (60GB ) from $349 to $299 and the Arcade from $279 to $199. I really like these prices. It puts the 120GB Elite on par with the PS3, makes the Pro only $50 more than a Wii and the Arcade is slashed to $50 below the Wii.
It will be very interesting to see if the Arcade can sell at $199 or if people will continue to avoid that model. The lack of the hard drive really makes this model gimped because you can't download content. It is a strictly games only system which may appeal to some but it's not much worth while to most. At $199 the console should appeal to a whole new segment of gamers. As Microsoft is oft to say they sold over half of the original Xbox at or below $199. If the can pull this out with the 360 they will lock up 2nd place this generation.
Dropping the Pro 60GB model to $299 so closely to dropping the 20GB model to $299 will anger some gamers. I'm sure people ran out and bought the 20GB model thinking the 60GB might not get a price cut this year. They were wrong it seems. I like having the Pro at $299 because it is the best value system for most gamers. The 60GB HDD will be more than enough space for most gamers and unlike other consoles around this price you can actually download new songs for Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
Moving the Elite to $399 only makes sense. The Elite may not come with a BluRay drive but it comes with a bigger HDD that will allow you to download HD movies without the fear of having to delete stuff to make space. The Elite is made for the hardest of hard core and at the new price should compete very nicely against the PS3.
